Did you know that every eight minutes a pedestrian is injured in a traffic accident?  An even more important fact is that every two hours a pedestrian is killed!

A pedestrian is defined as anyone that is on foot, walking, hiking or jogging.  This accounted for 12 percent of all fatal traffic accidents in 2010 which is the last year that records are available.  According to recently released statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over 4,200 pedestrians died in car accidents in 2010.  This number of fatal pedestrian accidents has continued to rise the past few years, with a 3.9 percent increase from 2009 to 2010. (Data for 2011 hasn’t been finalized yet).

A closer look at the fatal pedestrian-car accident statistics in 2010:

  • 79 percent took place in non-intersections
  • 66 percent happened at night
  • 64 percent were male
  • 91 percent occurred in clear weather
  • Almost 50 percent happened on the weekend: Friday, Saturday and Sunday
  • 45 percent of the fatal crashes involved alcohol

California topped with the list with the most pedestrian deaths, falling just short of 600.  NHTSA administrator David Strickland noted that almost everyone is a pedestrian at some point in the day – people walking to and from parking lots to work or the store, walking pets and even to the end of the driveway to get the newspaper.

Because there are so many pedestrians and motorists on the roadways each day, it is important everyone take precautions in order to help prevent motor vehicle accidents.  Pedestrians should use crosswalks and intersections where possible. Drivers and pedestrians alike should pay close attention to surroundings and be aware of where traffic is.
