Elder abuse comes in many forms, all shapes and sizes. Some you would never expect to fall into the category of elder abuse and yet they do. This is an example of fraud that happened as a result of diminished capacity and is elder abuse just the same. This happens frequently at the hands of a relative and that makes this even more tragic.
California Police have arrested Samantha Pham, 30, of Elk Grove, CA after an elderly Campbell man came forward to say he had been conned out of his life savings. Police allege Pham ran a ‘Sweetheart” scam on the man and persuaded him to buy her a $73,000 Lexus and finance a new business. Law enforcement sources say after the man refinanced his home and gave several hundred thousand dollars to Pham to invest in her new financial company he was forced into bankruptcy and lost his home.
Authorities found that the financial company Pham allegedly started was actually her boyfriend’s “and almost $50,000 of the victim’s stolen money went to pay off the victim in another criminal case Pham faced in a neighboring state.” The elderly man reportedly maxed out his credit cards purchasing furniture for Pham’s purported new business.
According to the District Attorney, the man who repossessed the Lexus later told investigators that several months earlier he had repossessed from her a $100,000 BMW. Investigators subsequently learned that between 2009 and 2012, Pham had gambled away more than $1 million at the Red Hawk Casino in Placerville.
Police arrested Pham on Jan. 16. In Santa Clara County, Pham faces a felony charge of theft from an elder which carries a prison term of up to six years, if convicted.
