We live in a technology world and that comes with the good and the bad. These can appear to be the same and can work for you and against you. Social Media like Facebook, YouTube and Instagram are a few of the more popular ways to connect and each one of these platforms has their own level of risk. I am confining my comments in this blog to Facebook.
Facebook is by far the most popular way for people to connect and the ages that can be found on here range from newborn infants to people in excess of 100 years of age. Since so many people can be found here almost everyone will look here. Sometimes that will include those you don’t want to find you. If you are involved in a legal issue at any level you can expect the other side to research your posts on Facebook. That can work against you without you even knowing it. Be aware.
We have had clients that tell us that what they post is private and this is where the term secret comes in. If you tell one person it is no longer a secret and this is the definition of Facebook. Everything is public knowledge when you post it. Your profile may be private (more on that in a second) but the person you are telling may be very public. That removes your level of privacy and tells the world what you may not want them to know.
As far as privacy goes you must keep in mind that when the Pentagons website can be broken into, your Facebook account is not immune. While you may not agree, the reality is that very little privacy exists and when you whisper to a social media site you are in effect yelling to the world. This is not a good idea when you are involved in a legal setting. The other side will do whatever it takes to give the slightest appearance of doubt and this could cost you dearly.
