Nissan recently announced that they are recalling more than 1 million cars, SUVs and vans because the front passenger airbags may not inflate in the event of a crash.
According to an A.P. news report the recall will affect a number of popular models including the Altima, Leaf, Pathfinder SUV and Sentra. These are all model year 2013. The NV200 taxi van and the Infiniti JC35 from 2013 and the 2014 Infiniti QX60 and QX50 SUVs are also included in the recall.

Software Issues May Be Responsible For The Defect

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Nissan says the vehicles’ computer software may not detect an adult in the front passenger seat. When that happens, the airbag will not inflate and that places the passenger at increased risk of injury or even death. When the recall begins in mid-April, Nissan will notify vehicle owners and dealers will update the software at no cost to consumers. This is the second passenger airbag recall for some of the vehicles! In April 2013 Nissan recalled over 80,000 model year 2013 vehicles from the same group because a sensor was improperly manufactured and might prevent the passenger bag from working in a crash. Thankfully, to date no injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of the most recent recall. Nissan did however receive three reports of airbags failing to inflate in a crash. Nissan spokespersons say they are not sure if anyone was hurt in those incidents. This recall involves 990,000 vehicles in the United States. How many were actually injured or killed as a result of these defective airbags?

Auto Product Liability Issues

Auto defects are in the spotlight now with the significant General Motors recall where federal officials are looking into why the automaker did not issue a recall on a problem they’ve known about for a decade. Automakers have a duty and an obligation to report safety defects in a timely manner. GM’s failure to report the safety defects in time may have caused as few as 14 deaths and that number may actually be in the 300+ range depending on the source.
